Re: Hoverfly
Thanks Martin. As most us know it takes learning with less than perfect shots, first; and then trying and trying again, and so forth.
This is not to fail to mention that the work of others is always there for us to see. And I tend to think in my case that it has taken a bit of time to improve my shots and processing. There were quite a few of these hover flies around and I didn't get to feel flustered. I got the camera pre-focussed and moved myself back and forth, physically, as and when suitable angles and opportunities presented. I think this is a type of shot where a dslr can work very well. The problematic thing was fitting the 2x filter, because that then ties you to close range macro type work... photography, at times, can get fiddly! That is so with a dslr, especially, because you do not usually have the flexibility to change focusing distance and magnification around so easily. But there is nothing a bridge camera can offer that compares with the manual focusing ring of a dslr! I found mid-tone sharpening and luminosity sharpening were important parts of the final processing. In processing the raw file, I tried to tweak the picture so that I had the right sort of groundwork prepared... and slowly, perhaps, I get more fluent at doing that. In the past, I have tried and failed with dragon flies. But lets see! Geoff Geoff |

Re: Hoverfly
It is quite a nice sunny day down here, In Essex. I will try to go out again and try for some more shots.
BTW with dragonflies, Frank observed upon their habit of resting on fences and gateposts, to look out for their next prey item. On Saturday I might go out to a place I know where there could be possibilities. Geoff |

Re: Hoverfly
Nice!
The depth of field of what you see in the viewfinder I find to be fairly WISYWIG. And, because the peripheral stuff is so much out of focus, processing like local contrast enhancement and various types of sharpening really do seem to add effects, too. Is that a 4x filter that you used. Mine really seems to bulge! Geoff Geoff |
