iphone4 more than just a phone
Not had a lot of time to play with my D500 or P100 with work and things getting in the way. Or partake in the forum.
I have started to take more and more with my iphone4. even post production can now be done on the phone. allowing things like layers/masks/sharpening and most other photoshop techniques. blending pictures together can even be done as can swapping backgrounds etc. As you can see i have been busy with me phones apps and net access. i apologize now for the photo heavy post.(used large images) all from a phone camera so here are some photo's taken and edited all on the phone. even uploaded to net from phone. only computer used is this post(its easier to type on a keyboard) ![]() ![]() top one taken with slow shutter app allowing 2 4 6 8 10 sec shutter other one normal camera photo ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() all above are from Beaumont park. now some fun snaps ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: iphone4 more than just a phone
Hi Martin,
The beauty of these phone-cams is there portability and accessibility to everything else. Recently I have not used my phone-cam so much. The processing power gives you a lot of scope for on-the-go work that I haven't got. I tend to upload my shots to my PC and process them in that way. Later in the year, I want to see if I can fork out for a high end Android. You have been doing a lot of experimentation with processing; and I am starting to get a bit fascinated by the way that, in a shoot such as the one I did recently at Greenstead Church, I have been able to review my judgment as to how I composed the shots and then went home and processed them, and did things much better than I used to; but there are always improvements I could make, with the benefit of hindsight. The stain glass window was one where I drew on earlier practice. And currently I am gearing up for a shoot at Chelmsford Cathedral. What I think you are doing, to an extent, is taking the shot and processing it there and then. Essentially that means that it is possible to start over again on site and recompose with better effect. (Of course this can be done with the Nikon high-enders; but I have not yet done that.) This is all some food for thought because it means I can evaluate candidate Androids to better effect before I consider buying. Some phones phones I understand also have zoom lenses. Geoff Geoff |

Re: iphone4 more than just a phone
with the way that you can now take/process and uplaod on mobile devices. the only thing holding them back is the size of the camera sensor. my iphone has a 5meg sensor but at least one of the nokia's has a 12meg one. things like the ipad2 and other tablets have also camera's in them.
i only used my iphone at the park becuase it was raining and unlike the higher end Nikons my D5000 is not weatherproof. my website http://www.wild-house.webspace.virginmed...index.html my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/51188248@N06/ my photobucket http://s331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/squat_photo/ |

A camera or phone with a C sized sensor would take a much better picture than a camera/phone with a smaller sensor that might have far more 'megapixels' crammed on it. Picture quality is not down to how many megapixels a camera or phone has but the physical size of the sensor. if you haven't tired it yet I see hear a lot of good things about the Hipstamatic app (£1.19 from the app store - try the John s lens and Kodot film) |

Re: iphone4 more than just a phone
With Nikon's there are the DX and FX sensor sizes. FX is the flashy full format (35 mm).
<!-- m -->nclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/fx.htm<!-- m --> is a brief outline for the D3. With the DX format, the sensor size is smaller (<!-- m -->nclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/dx.htm<!-- m -->). One advantage is that you seemingly get more zoom capability. But, of course, you do not get all the quality of the FX format. I guess that you get the benefit of using the better central part of the lens, too. I believe, also, that the lenses are different for the DX and FX format, but I am not fully conversant on this subject. It's just that I am trying to push the boundaries out a bit, of what I understand. Bridge cameras can use even smaller sensor sizes. These days sensor arrays are getting more and tightly packed and the results of such tight packing seemingly are not always beneficial. There is always a sweet spot to consider, because the larger sensor size means bigger and more costlier glass. And small sensor sizes with higher densities can take you a longer and longer distance down the road of quality results. Obviously if you want to produce A3 and larger sized prints then you will want to spend and carry more. With Kit for the D3 you are speaking of many thousands of pounds, I believe. Long zoom lenses are particularly huge and costly. So, again, I am far from being an expert here. So I think some of this debate is about how good small tightly packed sensors are getting. Re: iphone4 more than just a phone
As i mentioned in post. it is only the small sensor that lets it down... perhaps my wording was not the best, mentioning the mega pixels and sensor together.sensor wise the one the iphone 4 has does a fantastic job for its size.
as for mega pixels we all know that its down to sensor and the user. not the mega pixels. a lot of pro's are still using 10meg D200 and D60s. i know of one wedding photographer that as only just upgraded from a D60 and he as been using 3 of them since they came out. he as only upgraded so he can use non afs lenses. but still get auto focus. what as upgraded to you ask nothing glamorous or expensive. he saw a local store selling a Nikon D90 kit cheep. back to the iphone. Apps i use are camera+/iris/juxtaposer/snapseed and slow shutter to name a few. Hipstamatic is good also but i find it limited to only the photo's you take with it. iris and snapseed are the iphone equivalent of Photoshop image manipulation. the camera+ app allows you to choose the exposure section of picture and focus point. Nikon's DX sensor has a 1.5 crop factor.this means you get 1.5 times the focal length on lenses. example a 35mm becomes more of a 50mm lens on a DX camera. the DX lenses are by no means cheap the one most users want the 24mm - 70mm f2.8 in DX afs costs about £1200 while the non afs ones are nearer £500 cheaper only difference is afs have the in built motor for auto focus. my website http://www.wild-house.webspace.virginmed...index.html my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/51188248@N06/ my photobucket http://s331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/squat_photo/ |
