On the left we have a conversion from RAW that has not been worked on in the RAW processor. On the right is the fully tweaked picture which includes a custom gradient filter having been applied.

A shot taken in RAW will tend to be a little dark, because of the lighter parts of the shot that you plan to retain or improve. And notice how well it is possible to bring out detail in darker areas; the foliage of those trees across the water is fully brought out!

The LEVELS command was used to tweak the available tonal range, and you can see the amount of improvement that has become possible, overall. There are aspects that I have not yet described, though. For example there are procedures for recovery of shadows, highlights and mid-tones and sharpening of detail.

I should perhaps emphasise again that working with RAW images is largely about anticipating the whole work flow; and that the entire game plan is not so easy to grasp, straight-out. Nevertheless and hopefully progressive improvements can be made.
