Very carefully controlled DOF is one thing that marks this shot out. Focus and blur is in places that enhance the composition. This lady duck is seemingly posing for the camera; the photographer is being kept an eye on; she is getting ready, if needs be, to launch off into the water.

So, congratulations to FujimanG for capturing a most worthy image.

I'll say a few words why I like this photo...
the focus is good and is on the head of the Mallard rather than the body making the dof pretty much spot on, I know the photo has been cropped but the photographer (Gerry) has left a nice space to the right of the frame keeping it tight on the left. Whilst he could have left a little more to the right it works fine, we don't need to see what the Mallard is looking at but we do need a feel of space that he is looking into. By lowering the camera or his body position Gerry hasn't fallen into the 5'6" trap which gives us a better picture perspective. OK so maybe its not the best wildlife photo we'll ever see but its a nice record and a deserving 'photo of the week'.

That is a really nice photo. I like the position of the duck, the way it is looking over it's shoulder (do ducks have shoulders lol), well done Gerry, very well deserving of POTW.
