RE: Post processing
I think that works. I will download the first image later and show you how I personally would render it. Or maybe some else will beat me to it.

Of course, we know, one can do overdo sharpening. But what you've applied so far is quite light. Over time, one picks up an eye for this.

There is more that could be done, than this.

What processor are you using?

RE: Post processing
Ah right. I use the Gimp pretty well all the time.

Learning how to use an advanced post processor is in my opinon a sort of Road to Perdition. It can be painful learning to judge by eye and use the histogram displays, also. The results that you get are always easier to do as you get more practice. But the early learning stages are not particularly easy.

Anyway you have a specimen of some work that can be done using the Gimp. I used about seven stages in my work flow.

Geoff

I used just lightroom on this, it was just one step.

I'll have a go in Gimp and post the result

RE: Post processing
Sorry Geoff but I think your crop doesn't work and there needs to be more space to the right of the bird to balance the frame, maybe not as much as the original edit but that does work better.
In the version below I have cropped it in a little, removed (clone tool) the odd bit of water in front of the bird and adjusted the photo slightly in 'curves' (you should be able to do this in lightroom) and add a slight sharpening just to the bird using the lasso tool.
