The Count on Forum Posts

Hi Everyone,

I was browsing MYBB developer's discussion boards, as one does! And I discovered how the post count can be inactivated on a forum.

The Off Topic forum contains lots of easy post options. There is Word Association, for example... although I sometimes have to look up Wikipedia and on line dictionaries to get a clue as to how to follow some words.

A few of us may now see our post counts drop.

It's a pity, in a way, that I couldn't know everything there was to be known instantly about MYBB forum software... "immorally" high post counts did cause some friction, a little earlier.

Hi Leon,

The way to take those posts down would be for me to delete that thread and start again with the last word entered. You see my just having changed the board setting won't do the job retrospectively.

Does that sound like fair dos?

whilst post counts are certainly not immoral I have always found them to be a childish edition to any web site. They cause arguments and spamming and I have never seen the point of them.

I think some of this is down to the business of group dynamics.

I've run youth clubs. I have been a school teacher. Yes, games and rivalries are all in the mix.

Another interesting thing about forums (and life in general) is that a little bit of friction makes things run better.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying troll heaven (or should that be troll valhalla) is a good idea. But I think that forum software builders always build in post counts because it eggs folks folk on, some.
