Geoff the more rules you have the more complicated it becomes. You can't and shouldn't force members to fill out their profile page, yes it is helpful when answering queries to know which camera they have but if members can't see that then there is no point banging on about it.

yes I did know you simply click on the name to view a profile - most forums have had this facility for as long as I can remember

Yes, to go back to square one, as it were, members have to say what camera they have or else they can't register. I have seen spammers put stupid stuff in that box. (Indeed it is an anti spamming device of sorts, too). The vast majority of members do not have an issue with this.

The practical problem you raised was of members not keeping that info up to date, simply by overlooking it.

So what I was essentially saying is that can we just deploy some smart diplomacy.

I have worked out how I could deploy your original suggestion moderately quickly and sometimes a software solution to an issue is extremely smart... take for instance my plugin that renders images as links inside of quotes.

So coming back again, it is only one click to get to a members profile. It would be just one click if I implemented your suggestion, too.

But I think it would still be in order just to ask members to update their profile, as and when the need arises.

Since I have recently been accused of being Adolf Hitler, I thought it might be all right for me to crack that nazi style joke. But no, rules like that are not a good idea.

I actually think I was having arguments picked with me, as well, on that occasion.

Also don't forget that most members are putting their camera up in their title; as far as I can see everyone has done that too.
