Re: Comparison of 'Intelligent Auto' & Manual modes.
The General Electric X5 has something similar and they call it AI AE (artificial intelligence auto exposure). Both systems use the on board processor to do lots and lot of corrections, different for different parts of the picture.

The older systems gave auto exposure a bad name, since many shots would used to come out bad. In the case of high contrast pics, the ephotozine appraisal says the the GE's system tends to fail.

Because of the evident similarities in the algorithm, I would expect it to fail similarly on the FZ45.

I would need to look up some reviews, though, to be able to comment more precisely. Both cameras have the manual settings available, but plainly Intelligent Auto works more often than did the old-style auto exposure settings.

Re: Comparison of 'Intelligent Auto' & Manual modes.
I have found reliable comment on this aspect at <!-- m -->nclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/ ... 45_review/<!-- m -->

Quote:In practice the Intelligent Auto Mode system works very well, with the camera seamlessly choosing the most appropriate combination of settings for the current situation. The 6 available scene modes are Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery and Sunset, so obviously not all situations are covered by Intelligent Auto Mode, but it does work for the majority of the time. It makes it possible for the less experienced photographer to easily take well-exposed, sharp pictures of people, scenery and close-ups by simply pointing and shooting the camera. In addition to Intelligent Auto, also catering for the beginner are a total of 22 scene modes.
